Day 1 – Forster to Myall Lakes

After a great Christmas at Polkilbin and New Years at my Mums in Forster.  We leave Forster for a week a Myall Lakes Van Park,  I booked months ago, but even then a week was all I could get.  Originally we had a split booking between a regular site and a “Lakeside” site, but a couple of weeks ago we were moved to a lakeside for the whole stay.

All the way up to Foster the Kayak on the roof was silent, but today while driving it’s making a terrible racket in the wind.  We stop twice to adjust the straps and try and think what could be different, but it makes no difference.  It’s noise is almost unbearable in the car.   We stop once more at a rest stop off the highway, this time we adjust the cradles the kayak is sitting in, while still not quite a quiet as the trip up it’s a 100% improvement and we can hear ourselves think.

Off the highway at Bulahdelah, can’t remember doing that since the bypass was put in.   The road in is fine, but the last 20 or so KM’s is dirt and with all the rain it’s pretty muddy.  We end up following a L plater the last 10Km, I’m sure he never got over 50!  He didn’t pull over either!

We arrive at the caravan park and due to Covid, all the check-in has been completed online and we’ve been emailed gate codes and the like.   Only they don’t work of course.  Justine goes in and we get the gate open.   It’s an odd park, long and thin with just one narrow road and sites on both sides,  The lakeside ones seem OK, the others seem really boggy and some have really big puddles.

We park the van up with more ease than first glance might have suggested was possible, and we’re fortunate as the rain holds off while we do the bulk of the full setup given we’re here for a week.  The site is great, about 10 or so meters from the lake and raised just enough that we’re not in a bog.  Having said that, the car and the van are absolutely sprayed in mud from the trip in and the step mat is of no help whatsoever.

A bit of a lunch time rain storm and we hunker down under the awning, at least it’s not cold.

Finally mid-afternoon, it starts to clear and we take a walk around to examine our surroundings, A walk up to the reception/café/pool area, that might come in handy a bit later.  Then down to the lake.  The official beach area is about 50mtrs up from us, but there are small sandy entrances all up and down the lake front.    Just up from the beach we see a couple of Roos grazing,  I’m surprised to see them in such a populated area.

Kayak in tow, we hit the lake right in front of the van.  I’ve got to say, being fresh(ish) and not salt water, the lake is great.   It’s got this brown hue from the tannins in the trees, but it lovely and fresh and not that cold.  We all take turns having a paddle, the Kayak was a great purchase and worth every cent now.  While not too deep, you can get more than waist deep at about 20mts or so from shore, and the bottom is nice clean sand rather than weed.  Not that at waist deep you can see your feet in the brown colour.

Talking to a guy out on his boat, apparently the rain has been pretty non stop the last few days so they’re pretty relieved to see some blue sky.

After a yummy dinner, the family of Roos start to migrate by, and stop just behind our van to graze for what must have been close to 30mins,  pretty amazing.
