Day 2 – Hawks Nest

This is a great location for a van park, having not been here before we weren’t quite sure what to expect. I think we got lucky with the site we’ve been given.  Such a great view over the lake.  Almost like a camp site, but with the benefit of power and water.  Having said that, some of the other sites are really boggy with lots of standing water,  so I’m damn glad we’re not in one of those or it might be a different story.

Today we decide to take a trip into Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens.   The Van park is on this point where the lake narrows to neck, and there is a car ferry to get over to the coast side of the lake then a 40odd km drive down through the national park to town.   The Ferry is only small, it looks like it only holds about 6 cars at a time, but it doesn’t need to go far as the lake is pretty narrow here.  As we get off we see about a dozen 4×4 queued up to come back over, so it will be a least two trips for them!

We drive by about half a dozen National Park campgrounds, and the “Campsite Full” sign is out on all of them.  I had hoped to maybe spend a couple of days at one when we leave, but that’s looking slim now.

Into Hawk’s Nest and a drive around Jimmy’s Beach and then a brief stop to the main beach for a look.  Boy does it look rough and even with the flagged area, not sure I’d be wanting to swim there today.    Over the bridge to Tea Gardens.  The bridge is wider and not quite as tall as I remember it.  A quick lunch and a drive about.   While crowded and busy, I kinda expected it to be more crazy than it actually is.

Finally we make our way back home, there are a couple of 4×4 tracks off toward the beach, but not for today, maybe later in the week we can give them a try.  I got 4×4 recovery tracks for Xmas, and while I don’t want to need to use them, but between them and the new All Terrain tyres I’ve put on the MUX, they give me a little confidence to hit the sand.

Back at the van park and we all go for a swim and a Kayak again.

About 4:30 and the rain comes in again.   At 5:30 we see one of the Roos return for a bit of a munch right in front of the van, but she doesn’t last that long in the rain.  A long and rainy night in the van ends the day.
