Day 112 – Kalgoorlie

At bit like Mt Isa, the mine and the town are intrinsically linked, with the town bordering the mine or the otherway around.

We take a drive around town, it’s larger than I expected and like a lot of country towns many of the roads are really wide.

A (very quick) history lesson – the gold mining operations have been combined into a single, huge open-cut mine, which is called the Superpit. From over 240 single-person hand-dug underground mines, over the last 140 years, it has eventually been amalgamated into one massive operation.

We drive up to the lookout over the Superpit – it really is a bloody large hole in the ground. Tomorrow we should do the official tour.

Back into town, for the super pit tour we need long sleeves and pants, and it’s 40+ degrees, we need to find the coolest long clothes we can. So a quick trip to Kmart and Target.

Today it is hot, hot and damn dry. The van AC has been going full pelt for the last 24hrs, but the van is still not cool. There is no shade at park so the van is in direct sunlight and must be in 50+ heat.

An afternoon swim and finally late in the evening it starts to cool down (a bit).

Did I mention it’s hot?
