Day 11 – Robe To Mt Gambier

In the early hours of the morning the wind started to pick up, nothing like the last night at Port Elliot, and no rain.  But the awning was making a fair bit of noise.  So again the question, “Is it worth getting up and getting cold?”, this time the answer was “No”, but that meant we got broken sleep all morning due to the noise.

Finally up, we get ready and say goodbye to the Bendigo group and other Wonderland people, it was a pity we didn’t get more time to chat, but we just didn’t seem to be both around at the same time.

A few locals walking the trail come though the park, and they all commented what a good day it was yesterday and how today, windy and overcast is the norm here at this time of year, so maybe we were luckier than we thought on yesterday’s walk.

Out of town, and we head towards the small town of Beachport, on the way we see an Emu on the road, and I have to brake pretty hard to miss him as he heads off into the bush.

In Beachport they have marked out a tourist drive, so we follow the signs and are treated to some pretty special coastal scenery.  A quick stop at the Pool of Siloam, on the web it talks about it being 7 times saltier than the ocean, oddly there are no signs or anything here.  Needless to say we’re not going for a swim.  The kids do stick their fingers in for a taste, but don’t think it’s too salty.  We continue on the drive, a quick stop at a place labelled “the Blowhole”, but it’s pretty tame today.  Finally the road turns to dirt, soon after it seems to be heading into the dunes (we still have the van on), so a tricky U-Turn and we think some enterprising local must have removed one the tourist drive signs……   Anyway we find our way and head on the road to Millicent.

Lunch in Millicent, and they have this pretty amazing playground, so we let the kids loose for a while.  I’ve got to say today is damn cold, this must be the coldest day we have had so far.  So we’re all rugged up.

We finally arrive in Mt Gambier, we’re trying to decide between the Pines and the Big4 park, unfortunately there are really no practical camping options anywhere near town.  We think the Pines, but as we drive by it seems a bit small with a hell of a lot of permanent vans so we pick the Big4.    Again we let the kids have a break in the park’s playground.

At 3ish we take a drive into town to pick up a couple of supplies.  We then go to the Umpherston Sinkhole/Gardens (not to be confused with the Cave Garden Sinkhole in the middle of town).    The Sinkhole is nice, although in the dull of the afternoon it’s not as colourful as it might normally be.   All so they have dead headed a lot of the flower here in the last couple of days, we know because the Ballarat family had just been through here and had a wonderful table arrangement of hydrangeas!   It’s still pretty nice, there are meant to be possums here at night, but we must be a bit early for them.

A quick stop at the Cave Garden.   Mmm it would give any builder confidence in the foundations around here.

We haven’t used the diesel heater the last two nights in Robe, the park was too small and as the heaters been a little temperamental I didn’t want to blow smoke on the other campers. As a result it was pretty chilly overnight, in the morning the fan heater did the job, but you can’t run it all night.  So tonight, it’s drizzling, the vans are spaced out so we start it,  it starts fine, so it will be a warm night tonight.
