Day 12 – Mt Gambier, Blue Lake

It’s raining this morning so we take the opportunity for a sleep in.   It ends up being a bit of a lazy morning.   Victoria has slammed the door shut on visitors from parts of Sydney, including the Inner West.  I go online to apply for a travel permit, and fortunately it is only for people who have been in these Red Zones in the last 14 days, it will be 14 days by the time we enter Vic, so we seem safe.  Having said that things might change at any time.

The rain eases and we go out for lunch.  On the way back I drive a loop around Blue Lake,  we had planned to walk around, but the day isn’t great and the walk is really just the footpath beside the road most of the distance.  We stop at a few of the lookouts, of course the lake isn’t the real light blue that you’d get in summer. But it is still impressive.

While we’re in the car, we take a trip out to the other large lake in town, Valley Lake, I actually did a walk to a lookout this morning as it is just outside the caravan park.   Anyway unlike Blue Lake, here you can get down to the water and they have a nice recreation/picnic area here.   We’re about to drive out and we see the Valley Lake Conservation Area,  this large fenced off place.  So we go in and have a walk around.  We see a couple of Tasmanian Paddymelons, a rather large family of small Kangaroos and heaps of different birds.   We were looking like mad all hoping to see a Koala in the trees as they claim some are here, but we couldn’t spot one.   As we’re walking the sun actually starts to break through and it ends up being a really pleasant afternoon.

Back to the van and the kids burn off some energy on the jumping pillow and playing table tennis in the games room.

It’s probably due to the weather, but I kinda expected more out of Mt Gambier.  It’s nice enough, but maybe not a place I’d race back too.

We think about going out for dinner, but the plan is to try and freecamp out near Port MacDonnell tomorrow night, so we like to spend money elsewhere in a town where we can,  that and the local hotel there seems to have a fantastic looking menu!.
