Day 27 – Warburton’s Bridge to Bendigo

Boy, that was a super cold night, again OK in bed, but even with the diesel heater running it pretty cold in the van. We’ve left the thermometer outside and it’s reporting 0°.  There is the frost all over the grass and a few of the puddles have ice patches in them.   As the sun hits the treetops the frost must be melting and while we’ve got bright blue skies, it looks like it’s raining here as the moisture falls from the trees.

Bacon and Eggs off the Barby and we enjoy our surroundings.   We’re still a bit up in the air about what we’ll do.  Today we’re only going to Bendigo which is only about 50km up the road. On the way we drive though Castlemaine.

Bendigo is a big place, Justine use to come here when she lived in Melbourne and had friends in the area, but that was 25 odd years ago, so obviously things have changed.

None of the caravan parks are near the centre of Bendigo, they all seem to be on the outskirts.  It seems however we have successfully select the park that is the furthest away possible.   When checking in, they tell Justine it was -3° last night, so cold, some pipe froze.

So it looks like we’ve got an extra week, so we take the opportunity to get what should be the last batch of washing and some shopping done.  Checking the Victorian website, they are treating all of NSW as an Orange zone, so if we cross the border we’d need a Covid test to come back.   So whatever we do will need to be on this side of the Murray.

The kids enjoy the huge jumping pillow, there is another kid there so that keeps them occupied for longer than normal.

There are two things that I can see we should do in town (obviously there are tons more), but one is a underground mine tour and the other is a trip on the local tourist Trams.  The Mine is all booked out today, so we do the Tram.  It’s a bit of fun, the old trams are pretty amazing and the drivers are really nice, but the overall experience rates pretty high on the craptastic meter.

I knew Bendigo was rich in its day, but there are some impressive building here, and the Sacred Heart Cathedral is enormous.

Given the mine tour is now booked for tomorrow at 11:30, we decide to stay another night.  Then maybe 2 nights in Echuca and maybe over to Beechworth and Kelly country for a couple of nights.  Oddly this was on our first cut of the trip we worked out 18mths ago, but got dropped due to timing, so nice to see it back in.
