Day 3 – Deepwater to Hervey Bay

We up by 6:30, although neither of us have had a great night sleep.   Given we packed up most things last night, we on the road just on 7.   We only get a few Kms up the New England when we’re stopped by roadworks at Bolivia.  As we pass, we can see they are building this bridge over the valley to bypass this section of winding road.

After about 50km we pull into Tenterfield for a quick breakfast.  Over the border at Wallangarra, then fuel up in Warwick where Justine takes over the driving.  We hit the outskirts of Toowoomba and Google Maps has this bypass that takes us around Toowoomba and it is mean to be 10min shorter.  Shorter, maybe.  Goat Track, most definitely.   I am not in the good books with the driver!

All the while the traffic is getting busier and busier.  When we decided to change arriving at Hervey Bay from Tues to Mon, we failed to realise this would be easter Monday and every Queenslander and their dog would be coming home.

We eventually pull into Nanango for lunch, the only place that seems open is a Fried Chicken shop and it is doing a roaring trade.  It’s at this time we also realised the Mask restriction that are current in Queensland.  Lucky we had some with us.

Finally we hit the Bruce highway and with it the rain that has been threatening all day, the rain and the massive increase in traffic.  While a lot is going north with us, the procession south is much worse.   A final fuel stop, and today’s economy has been pretty good, not the best we’ve had, but a sure sight better than Saturday’s effort.

After another 9 hrs on the road we pull into Dawn’s,  and as it’s raining do the smallest of setups we can get away with.    Dawn’s place seems to miss the rain often, so there’s no complaining of a bit of a downpour.

Dinner with Dawn, Justine’s brother Mark and he’s partner.   The Kids are so excited to be here.
