Day 2 – Deepwater

The kids woke us up at around 7-ish, but with daylight savings, it feels like 8(-ish). The kids go and look for the eggs, and it takes them less than 2 minutes. There aren’t many places to hide them in a caravan. The kids then eat some chocolate and have the traditional hot cross bun. Then Liam started writing some of the first Easter Sunday paragraph, and I have to say, he did a magnificent job.

*No awards for figuring out who wrote that paragraph.

A relaxed morning, which was all part of the plan.   Today was all about relaxing after yesterday’s drive.   During the morning we have a visit from the resident chickens and a sheep with Easter ears on.

Shortly after we arrived yesterday the owner turned up to confirm the booking and take the money.  He mentions that there is a walk around the property, should take about 45mins and points out to the track behind us.   So, keen to do some exploring, we start down this track that is on the other side of the fence. From his vague instructions it should lead us towards a creek that will bring us around to the entrance of the property.  It’s not long before we’re nowhere near a creek and there is really no track at all.  We’re loosely following a fence, but somehow it feels we’re on the wrong side of it.  After 30 odd min of tramping through the bush, we end up needing to wedge ourselves through a fence and finally find some resemblance of a creek.   From here we make it back to the van.  As least one thing was accurate, it was around 45min.

Before lunch the kids find some other kids to play with so that keeps them busy for a while.  After lunch I suggest we drive to a walk called Thunderbolts Lookout (not to be confused with Thunderbolts Rock, or Thunderbolts Cave).  We’re just about to set off and it starts to rain, not too heavy, but more than you’d want to walk in.   So we retreat inside and we watch a movie to kill some time.

While the movie has been playing the weather had improved so as soon as it’s done we drive the 30 odd Km to the walk.  From here it’s about a K, to the lookout.   The track is pretty good, but is steep in sections.  The track winds around this outcrop of rocks, eventually there is a really steep section to climb to the base of the outcrop, then the track actually goes into and between the rocks.  Finally at the end is this steel ladder, maybe 15 or more steps to reach the summit and the lookout.   The kids are fine, not sure Justine or I felt the same.   In the end the view from the top was great and worth the walk.   The trip back down was much easier too (well after getting down that Ladder!)

We’re not back till well after 4, and as daylight savings has ended and it’s very overcast, it’s pretty dull.  So we get the fire going early.   As we want to get going early tomorrow, we’ve packed our fire pit away and grab one of the supplied ones from a vacated campsite.  These are pretty good barrel types so we get a raging fire happening tonight.

After dinner, some marshmallows, but Liam is not keen that we’re not going to have a night time movie, so seems a bit upset or annoyed.

The people on either side of us are leaving tomorrow too.  I just hope the traffic is not too bad.

It’s been a great place to stay. That nice balance between a free camp and a caravan park.  I’d be happy to come back again, although maybe not at Easter.  Having said that I’m also fine that we’re only here the two nights and not the three originally planned.  While yesterday was long, it didn’t knock the stuffing out of us that I feared it might.

Like last night, whilst it’s fresh, it’s not really cold enough to put the heater on.   Damn!
