Day 14 – Blue Mountains

I go to get up, then I hear rain, so bugger it, let’s stay in bed, so it’s around 9 when we get up.  Transit van man has left.

Breakfast then we head to Scenic World, it’s cold, overcast and a bit drizzly when we arrive, due to Covid we’ve got to book in online, which we do from the carpark.   Unlike normal times when you can kinda pick and choose what you do, now it’s a set menu, firstly… well after queueing for 20 min or so, get on the skyway, a cable car that traverses the Jamison valley, as we get on we see water on the floor and realise half the car is open to the elements.   As we start the trip, it’s a bit breezy, so given the heights, which they helpfully remind us is over twice the height of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, I’m not keen on the movement.  Given my love of heights, I’m surprisingly OK with it.

Then onto the SkyRail, a railway car that descends through a natural cave at 52 degrees, I know what to expect, the kids less so.  Having said that, the carriage seem to have been upgraded a lot since last time we went, so not much chance of falling out now.  Liam loves it, Caitlin too, me, let say I’m holding on tight. Fortunately it’s over in about 5 min.    We then have a leisurely stroll on a raised boardwalk to the final ride the cableway, a huge gondola that takes us back to the main centre.  In the end this is pretty easy and we’re deposited in the gift store.

Lunch in town at one of the local cafes

We drive around to Echo point to see the “Three Sisters”, and we take a couple of the short walks, one of which is a lookout right on top of them.  There is a walk here that we can see below allows you to cross a small bridge onto the 1st “sister” the kids beg to walk down there, but the sign say it’s a steep 80mtr and the sight of the younger visitors struggling on their way back up means we’ll give this a miss.

We take the Cliff Drive, and visit Katoomba Cascades, the walk to the Leura cascades appears closed to do some flooding that has washed the track out.

On the way back we stop at the Hydro majestic to take a look down at the Megalong valley that we are staying in, on the road down in the valley you can see the hotel up on the cliffs so it gives the kids a better understanding of where we are.

A stop at Evans lookout to see the Grosse valley to the north, and then we take a 4×4 shortcut over to Govett’s Leap, to see bridesmaid falls

On the road back down to the valley, Justine spots a place called Mermaids Cave, so we stop and take a walk, what a great stop, however this is steep enough and I’m glad we didn’t do the 1st sister walk

Back to the farm and there are more Roos, Horses and Lamas

Another Fire night, and as we get ready to go inside, I review the weather forecast, as it was meant to be quite windy today, but so far it hasn’t been too bad.  The forecast is only predicting 20-25km/h winds so we leave the awning out, not long after we get into bed it really starts howling outside, so we jump out to roll it up.   I’ve never seen this before, but we when get back in the van there are dozens and dozens of dopey flies all over the ceiling, they must have been sleeping on the awning and moved to the light when we rolled it up.   It takes 15mins or more to sweep most of them outside.
