Day 13 – Megalong Valley

Up and breakfast, and we pack up to drive about 5km up the road to the farmstay.  Most of the other campers have/are leaving, it’s an OK place for an overnight stay, but that’s about it.

We pull into the farmstay, and there are horses, ponies, lamas, and other animals walking around feeding.    Justine books in and we’re given some vague instructions to drive towards the back of the property.  Apparently while they were quite busy over the long weekend today we’ll be the only guests.    It a really nice spot with a great view of the valley in one direction and cliffs of the mountains in the other.  The kids run of to try and pat some of the horses on the property, the brown one was ok with it, the white wasn’t having a bar of it.

We collect some firewood from around the property, have some lunch and get ready to drive to a walk about 10mins away when it start to rain, only lightly but not something you’d want to be walking around in.    We haven’t had much solar yesterday and today, so the batteries are around 45%, still not bad considering the last time we plugged into power was around 9 days ago.   So given we’re here by ourselves and not much is probably going to happen this afternoon, I use the opportunity to run the gennie for a bit to top them up.   As much as an experiment as anything.  It’s not like I can really run the gennie for any length of time at home.

We run it for an about an hour and a half and get about 15% in, with no solar, probably not enough for a full days use, but should be enough to get us home.

The rain holds off and as we drive out, the Alpacas are having a lie down on the road, It takes a bit to move them out of our way.

We drive out to go to Coachwood Glen, a short rainforest walk.  It short, but a great walk, we cross a creek and the water is astonishingly clear.  On the way back to the car, I kick my toe pretty badly on a rock, let’s hope it’s not as bad as Bowen.

Back to the van, and as it’s a bit of a cold and cloudy day, we make some pancakes for an afternoon snack.  A bit later, I get a great fire going, we’ve managed to scavenge quite a bit of wood from around the property.   We fire up the Weber for Pizza night.   There are about 10 or so horses in the paddock we’re in and we see two large groups of Kangaroos in two surrounding paddocks.

Pizzas around the fire and after we let the kids watch a movie, finally the rain really starts to fall, no need to extinguish the fire.  We’ve kinda planned to do the Katoomba, Blackheath things tomorrow, not sure if this rain will stop it.

Some guy in a transit van drives in after dark, he’s drive a bit then stops, then moves on.  We think he is looking for firewood, not sure, it’s a little odd.  So we won’t be having the place to ourselves tonight.  The toe hurts, but not black, so let’s hope.
