Day 116 – Bight to Ambrosia

With the 2.5 hr time change, we officially wake up very late. What a great night’s sleep, even with the trucks not that far away it is so peaceful.

At the start of this trip (3 months ago) I’d suggested to Liam that if the time was right I’d let him “drive” the car. I’d thought this might happen on a farm stay or some other remote spot, but to date it hasn’t happened. We’ll today we’re way off the public road, there is no-one here and there is a 70m cliff next to us, what the hell. So with the van attached and Liam behind the wheel we set off! (what could possibly go wrong). He does a good job, navigating the bush track back to the main look out area. Caitlin gets a go, let’s say it may be a bit longer before she gets her license!

We hit the Eyre highway again and keep heading east.

There are a couple of lookouts along the way that have those iconic views of the bight. We’re lucky the sun comes out at the right time.

We’ve been told about these caves near Nullarbor village (roadhouse). So we drive the 10km north to check them out. There are three caves, but it is not until we are out there we find out that you can only walk into one of them. The others would need some gear or a ladder. So we enter the one cave. It’s good, but the jury is still out as to if it was worth the 20km round trip on a pretty rough road.

We’ve left the absolute flat treeless plains for undulating hills with the regular bush now.

We pull into a large rest area, and as with most of these sites there are tracks that lead you a little further away from the highway to camp up for the evening.

In WA all fires where banned during summer, here in SA, it’s only on total fire ban days they are not allowed. There are still restrictions, but they are manageable. It’s cool, particularly at night, so for the first time in over a month we have a fire. Trouble is with our extra 2.5hrs it’s not dark till 9pm. So we have a twilight fire.
