Day 109 – Ravensthorpe to Esperance

Were up earlyish, I’m surprised the road noise hasn’t been worse, but it was OK. We walk across the road to the BP road house, to our surprise the place is packed, there must be 20 people, so there goes a morning coffee.

Not much else is open in town, the cafes seems to be closed until after new year’s. So we head off towards Esperance. Again between these towns there is really nothing. There is one roadhouse between Ravensthorpe and Esperance, about 200km.

We arrive at the showgrounds and you can see all the tents and caravans around. It looks pretty basic, but it will do what we need.

We need to wait for the campground host “Wazza” to allocate us a spot. There are about 4 groups in front of us and site allocation does not appear to be a quick process. The sign showing powered sites is crossed out, but we figure we’ll ask anyway. Wazza says he’ll need to go take a look to see if any are available, so with Justine and Caitlin up front and Liam and myself hanging onto the back of a golf buggy (not in a seat, but where the bags would go) we’re off to find a site. “I’ve had heaps more than 4 in the buggy”, Wazza tells us.

We find a powered site, pay and start to setup. The power is quite a distance away, so the lead is draped across the path. Let’s just say OHS does not appear to be a big issue here.

In the afternoon we do a quick lap of the town to get our bearings. We let the kids have a play in one of the playgrounds to burn off some energy. There is a miniature railway here, but they’ve just finished for the day.

  1. The open road, is that a foretaste of the Nullarbor? Glad that you and Liam survived your trip on the back of the buggy. As you say Wazza is not to fussed with OHS issues. The joys of being able to do your own thing away from big brother.
