Day 86 – Coral Bay to Carnarvon

It was a windy night, probably windier than at Osprey Bay. Up and packup.
We drive across the road and park in the visitors centre, or visitors hut, I can’t quite tell. The water in the bay is sensational, and it is not far off high tide, although the tides here in the morning are pretty small, maybe half a metre.

We walk around Bill’s Bay to what they call Skeleton Bay, maybe 500mtr or so, to see if we can find this reef shark nursery. As we approach, we see the unmistakable outline of shark fins, albeit small ones in the water. The water in this bay would be a maximum of about knee deep, maybe slightly deeper nearer the ocean. We wade in, and get to about 10mtrs away from two pods??? of circling infant sharks. It was pretty amazing to see.

The drive to Carnarvon is pretty uneventful. Although we do cross the Tropic of Capricorn for what will be the fourth and final time. It still surprises me that, other than roadhouses and the entrances to a few cattle stations, there is nothing out here. We have gone 230km from small coastal tourist village to small coastal town and other than a road house there is nothing in-between.

We arrive at the van park “It’s a quiet time, pick which ever site you like” they tell us. We unhitch the van and do a tour of the town. I was expecting it to be a bit larger, seeing it is the major town for 500km.

As we drive up the main street, we see that part of it is blocked off and detours are in place. The signs say “special event”, a quick google show that today is Carnarvon’s Christmas Street party and it starts at 5.

We travel up there just after 5 and the kids are entertained by a magician. There are a bunch of street stalls as some musicians on the main stage. It wasn’t large, but it had a really good vibe about it. It was good to see everyone getting involved.
