Day 8 – Iririki Island.

We all drive into town …..that cargo ship is back…., Ken and Chris do their thing and we go to spend the Day on Iririki Island right in the middle of the harbour.

Somehow the kids con us into an icecream then we get on the small boat to take us across to Iririki.  This is a flash resort and has prices to match.  But to visit for the day is not too bad, about $20 each and we get that credit back for meals and drinks.

We first walk around to the far side of the island, you’re meant to be able to do some good snorkelling from here.  But we didn’t bring reef shoes and it otherwise looks difficult to get in to the water so we give it a miss.  What we can see from here is across the harbour to our house.  Given the swim in the bay here is out, we head up to the swimming pools (yep more than 1) and the kids have a ball trying each one out.  There a brief rainstorm while we are swimming, but nobody really minds and as soon as it starts it finishes again and the sun is out.

Lunch, which is considerably more expensive than our entry fee, but again that fine.  It’s an indication I wouldn’t want to be forced to eat here three meals a day.

The kids find the games room and play some ping pong.

We continue our lap around the resort and as we’re heading back towards the main reception we come across the water sports section.  So we grab a Kayak and I take turns with the kids taking them for a paddle down the harbour.  We’ve seen them from shore here the whole time, but on this east side of the island there are at least half a dozen wreck boats, some of them pretty big, all washed up by Cyclone Pam in 2015.  The government wants them gone, but no one will pay for it.  Ugly, but kinda interesting to kayak around.  Two laps and I’ve had enough.  That’s hard work.    Caitlin does some artwork in the sand with a stick, so cute.

We catch the ferry back to the mainland.  That was a great day, nice place, again to visit, not sure I’d want to stay for more than a few day (well not with kids anyway!)

A visit through the main food markets, and even though it’s late afternoon it’s still a bit hectic and I’m not sure I could name the majority of the fruit and veg.  It’s all a bit to intense for me!

We grab a bus off the street and head back home.  We’re getting a bit more use to them now.

As its Thursday, the Yardarm Bar at the “Vanuatu Cruising Yacht Club” is open, sound impressive, but it’s basically a bush bar at the boat yard.  But it’s only a 100mtr walk down the beach and they have cold beers and hamburgers. What’s not to love?   They have a fire going so that keeps Liam and Caitlin entertained.

Actually fires here are pretty common, no garbage services in the villages, so what little rubbish they have is just burnt.
