Day 2 – Vila Visit

Up for Sunrise, it’s a little overcast and windy, but still warm and nice. Breakfast and a relaxing morning taking in our surroundings.

We organise for Karl, the bus driver to pick us up and take us into Vila just before lunch.   He drops us at the northern end of town and we make our way south.   First stop is lunch at the Nambawan Café, then the craft markets.  I’m sure you can’t move in these places on Cruise ship days.  In fact we’re planned our activities around the Cruise ships to avoid the crowds.  The craft market are nice enough, but we might get something later in the trip when we’ve got a better idea of what’s available.

They’ve recently done up the foreshore of the bay here, which looks really nice.  We continue south and eventually arrange for Karl to pick us up and take us back to the house.  (oh “that” road again!)

About the Buses.  Here in Port Vila every second vehicle is some form of old minibus, most seem to be old Hyundai with a few other brands thrown in.  I’m guessing most are 2nd hand imports from Korea or elsewhere in SE Asia.  They are part bus, part taxi.  They have no fixed routes they just go where the majority of the passengers want to go, you flag one down, if they’re not going your way then don’t get on.

A normal fee is about 150~200Vt (~$2) each, we pay Karl more and he basically operates as a personal taxi.   Still cheaper than hiring a car, and on top of that they drive on the right here (and there are all these mad bus drivers on the road!), so I’m not sure how comfortable I’d be behind the wheel here.
