Day 2 – Carrathool to Berri

While crisp, it was a great night’s sleep.

We not in any super rush, and I’ve allowed some extra time this morning to practice our packups.  In the end we’re not out till just before 10am.

We pass Hay, and hit the barren Hay plain.  I still love it.  We stop in Balranald for lunch and to refuel.   Another pit stop by the river at Euston so the guys can finish all the fruit before quarantine at the SA border.

The driving today seems so much easier than yesterday.  Pretty flat roads, 110km/h and plenty of clear straight sections to overtake the many B double and road trains heading to Adelaide.

We crossover into Victoria at Mildura and make the last 100 odd km to the South Australian border.  There are all these warning signs about fines for having any fruit and veg, I knew about the fruit, but most veg seemed OK.  We pull into the bay to bin at little bit of stuff George has left.  We read the signs and there are heaps more stuff on this sign that we can’t apparently bring in compared to the web site.  So a practically full bag of beans is dumped.

A few K’s later we arrive at the quarantine checkpoint, we grab different lanes.   Inspectors jump and they check us out pretty well.  They specifically ask about honey due to the Verona mite outbreak.  We’re through in about 2-3min, so pull up 100mts or so up to wait for George and Nick.   They’re there for at least 10more mins.  Seems their inspector might have been a bit more thorough.

Finally on our way again, we turn off the highway just before Renmark.  I wanted to take a short detour to Heading Cliff Lookout, a raised platform overlooking the cliffs on the Murray river.   While great, I would have loved to seem them from the river or the other bank.

I had initially picked out a campsite about 20km north from here, about as close as you can get to May’s Corner.  The intersection of NSW, SA and Vic. Given we’re visiting the other corner posts, I thought it might be fitting.   Unfortunately, you can only get to the exact spot by boat as it’s on private property.   I checked a few weeks ago and oddly it was all booked out, just for tonight…..

Back to the main highway, via Renmark and we turn off just before Berri.  Our campsite is along the Murray, but unfortunately with all the trees on the riverbanks, the view is a little blocked.  Still a nice spot.

The guys get a great fire going.

We get a bit of rain, it only sprinkling on and off., but the wind, it gusts really hard for 5 mins or so then it really dies down, then 30min or so later it happens again.   We put a couple of extra poles and guys ropes to stop the awning blowing away.  I was fearing one of those nights with needing to check the awning every hour or so, but it’s not that bad.
