Fraser Island Day 6

We’re on the 3pm Ferry.  I did call and double check when I realised we put Dawn on the 2:30 ferry the other day, surely there’s not two with 30mins of each other, they are not both listed on the timetable.  Well I was wrong, there is.

We pack everything up, less on the roof this time.

While I think we might be just OK for fuel, noting that we’ve got about another 20km drive at the Riverheads before we get to a servo, it seems prudent to top up a little.  I say a little, as diesel is $3.55 a litre. Wow!  I only put 10ltrs in, so it still not the most expensive tank I’ve ever had, but it is the most I’ve ever paid per litre.

We drive over to McKenzie and all go for a swim, as we’re here a little earlier, good car parking and spots on the beach are easier to get.  The lake is just so crystal clear and to see how the water just gets so deep so quickly at the line where the water colour changes is amazing.

We’re in for close to an hour.  Caitlin and Justine go for an explore over to a small headland just off to the left.  Apparently it’s a lot further than it looks!

Finally done we head towards Kingfisher and arrive just after 1.

A small lunch at the café here.

We pump the tyres back up.  We take a walk out on the jetty, as much to kill time as anything.  The tide is super low, which is surprising as it was quite high at the same time only a few days ago when we dropped Dawn off, it just goes to show how much the tides move each day.

Under the wharf, down on the sand/mud flats there are hundreds of small Crabs, probably close to 20c piece in size, mostly seem to be moving in packs, it’s so funny to watch.

Sure enough there are two ferries here.  The bigger one is the 2:30 and while I think about trying to see if they’ll squeeze us on, it ends up looking pretty full.   So the 3pm ferry it is.

Finally it’s our time to board.  We need to drive on here, but will need to reverse off when we arrive at Riverheads.  So, I’m happy to be one of the last cars on, so I can be one of the first off.

Back to Dawn’s.  Unfortunately she’s crook as a dog.  She’s taken a Covid test and it is negative, which is what we’d expect.  We feel so guilty about making her sick.

Tuesday 18th

A busy morning as we need to leave for the Gold Coast today.   We need to go into town.  I want to give the Car and underwash (a jet of water under the car to clean off salt and sand).  There is one here in Hervey bay, but I’m not sure they are elsewhere.  They are certainly not a common sight in Sydney.

We need to do some shopping and we need to repack the car and the van too.

One thing after another and we’re not out till after 12.   We still haven’t had lunch yet, we try for Colonel McClowns in Maryborough, but there’s just no hope of finding van parking.  We continue onto Tiaro on the Bruce highway, there is a takeaway store here.  The food is average, and it take bloody ages, so we end up burning close to 1hr here.   Super frustrating.

We otherwise make decent time on the Bruce and M1, the sun starts to set as we hit the Gold Coast motorway, south of Brisbane.

Along the way we finally tell the kids why we’re going to the Gold Coast.  The Theme parks, it takes them a few seconds to join the dots, but then excitement all round.

Of course we’ve hit peak hour traffic, I had hoped to be parked up before 4, but we just got away too late and lunch took too long.  Towing at night on a packed start/stop freeway is not my idea of fun.  We finally pull into the caravan park after 6 and it’s dark.  I hope the site will be lit up, but it’s not.  So fun and games trying to back into a site where I just can’t see what’s going on.

Finally parked, and unhitched.  It’s immediately time for dinner.

We’ve finally decide, Seaworld tomorrow and Movieworld on Thursday.
