Day 5 – Cooma Loop

We will certainly stay here another night, it’s great spot.  But thought now goes to where to go after here?   The plan was loosely to go from here to Cooma then on through Jindabyne and to one of the camp sites past Thredbo.

I’ve been to Thredbo maybe twice, but I’ve never driven it, so I don’t recall what the road is like.  In any case it is 200km+ and tomorrow is going to be the Friday of the long weekend that marks the end of the snow season.   Maybe not the best plan I’ve had.   We look at the maps and we decide on going west from where we are and head towards Paddy’s River and the top of the Murray.  There seems to be plenty of places to camp so hopefully we can find somewhere nice.

So, given that, we decide to make the 200km round trip to Cooma and back, at least it will be without the van.   We’ll get to see some more of the country side.  We need some supplies for the next part of the trip and we really want to see if we can get some fishing rods for the kids, and Cooma is the biggest town around.   It is also the closest dump point, and we are unlikely to see another one tomorrow so we load up the toilet cassette and head off.

Toilet dumped, lunch eaten, fishing rods selected, groceries purchased, dismally small fuel tank filled, overpriced firewood in the boot, 200km later we back at the van.  Phew.

A fisherman has parked his car in the area next to us.  Seems pretty serious, all the gear, he has a small tinny on his trailer, but there is a tiny zodiac in the water too.   After an hour or so I can see he is packing up, I go over to have a chat.  Apparently, he landed (and released) three really good trout.  I explain the kids are going to have a go, but the trout will be safe.

Justine spends some time with the kids, but they don’t really show the same determination that they did on the Oz Trip and I think they are over it after about 1hr.  I use the time to get my overpriced firewood ready for a nice big campfire.

Oddly there are less campers here tonight than last night.

As the gennie is still hooked up, I run it for 30min to give the batteries a small boost, and I turn on the diesel heater so it can get running while having the extra charge.  A great fire and nice warm van tonight.

While a bit more of the moon is out, there are still great stars tonight.
