Day 121 – Port Lincoln to Port Lincoln National Park

We drive into town, I drop the family off at the local park and drive over to the car service centre. The 40,000km is a big one and they say they’ll need the car for 5 hrs. Our Sydney friends are over in the national park, and it would have been good to camp with them overnight, but we’re not sure if that’s possible.

We need to kill some time. Port Lincoln has one Cinema, well it did have one, but it closed, fortunately for us someone took over the cinema and it reopened about a week ago. We haven’t gone to the movies since the trip started. Justine would have liked to take them in Alice and Broome, while I was away, but there was nothing suitable playing. So we get some popcorn and watch “Wreck it Ralph II – Ralph Breaks the Internet”. The kids love it. Some lunch and a bit of a walk around town. It’s 1pm I give the car yard a call on spec, “it will be ready in 10min” Cool.

We’ve been undecided if we will try and go to the National Park (NP), about 30mins south east of Port Lincoln today or tomorrow. Our friends were staying 2 or 3 nights. So it would be better if we went today to be sure to see them. We have paid for two nights in the van park, but it’s not that expensive. Given the car is ready earlier than we expected and it’s not dark till 9pm we decide to pack up and go today. The fact that the van park is a bit soulless helps.

Our friends have “reserved” the spot next to them that was vacated this morning, and at about 3:30 we pull in. It’s a great spot, on a smallish cliff overlooking the beach. But the ever present dust is around, we’re covered in it after 10 mins.

Some swimming in the sheltered bay, although the water is a bit too shallow for swimming, and Liam is dying to do some more fishing. We find pippies for bait and the kids try their luck from some of the rocks.

They get a few nibbles and as luck would have it Caitlin lands her first fish (maybe 10cm long, but hey!). The excitement on her face is so obvious, it makes the effort all worthwhile. Liam seems to get a bite, but doesn’t land anything. He’s happy enough with getting a bite though.

Some yummy Pizzas for dinner (thanks Natasha) and we work out that you can have a fire down on the beach. We cook up a pot full of fresh pippies, but only Justine & Liam are game to try them. For the record, they were very nice.

I think it’s a good break, not only for the kids but also for Justine and I to have “other” adults to talk to. So the day worked out pretty well all round.
