Day 114 – Kalgoorlie to Nullarbor Straight

A day I’ve been looking forward to for a while. Finally hitting the Nullarbor, although sad too as it kinda signals the beginning of the end of the trip.

We go out via Coolgardie, not as big as I was expecting, almost a ghost town really. Back down to Norseman and finally heading east. That’s 200km done.

The temperature has dropped dramatically from the last two days and I think we only see a maximum of 28 or so as we drive, and it doesn’t even really feel that hot.

We’re not sure how far we’ll get, there are really only roadhouses and freecamps from here to Ceduna 1200km away. Initially we though we may stop at Fraser’s Range, but we pass that early. We then drive by Balladonia Roadhouse.

We make the famous 90mile straight, it’s 4pm, we’ve done 450km so time to find a spot to stop. We end up looking at a place called Taylor’s Maze. It’s just off the side of the road, a series of tracks really. But we can easily get a few 100m away from the road. So it should be a peaceful night without too much road noise.

Dinner and then as it gets dark we get to see one of the clearest views of the night sky we’ve had on this trip. Sensational!

Postscript

Actually this was a funny campsite, if you could call it that. Like I mentioned it was just a series of tracks that lead off into the bush. I’m surprised, especially given the dumped cars etc, we didn’t feel more uncomfortable, more nervous staying here, but I can’t say that we did. While odd, I was happier camping here than staying in one of the roadhouses along the Nullarbor.

  1. Love the old buildings, really something. Also loved the old pub? in your last blog in Kalgoorlie. I am having the best time looking over your shoulder in all the places you visit.
    Thanks so much.
