Day 83 – Exmouth Day 3

Up, breakfast and we head out to Cape Range NP. As per yesterday, the water is a wonderful colour, we stop at a few beaches as we head down the coast for a look.

As we drive I can see on the GPS a road off to the side that appears may go all the way to the beach. It doesn’t but we go for a walk anyway. The “beach” actually is a coral/rock ledge. In the distance I see a rock in the water, only that it moves. It’s a turtle, and a pretty large one. I race up the beach to see about 6 of them, a few just metres from the beach.

We visit a few of the camp sites along the way, and they are all nice, but are mostly behind the dunes, so don’t have any real view. At one there is an access road to the beach, so we take a drive. I don’t get bogged exactly, but realise I’d better let some air out of the tyres before we go any further. It was pretty soft sand.

A quick trip into the visitors centre. I overhear the staff telling someone you can snorkel off the beach as Osprey Bay campsite, this is the one I’d heard off, and was keen on checking out. So we make a few more stops before reaching Osprey. This is the business, a number of campsites are right on the beach with great views. Given the wind, you may not want to say here for a week, but the idea of camping up here tomorrow night is too good to pass up.

We go for a quick snorkel off the beach and while the coral is not that special we do find a turtle swimming out here, not nearly as large as the ones we saw this morning, but it would have to be 40-50cms.

We reach the bottom of the road and find the 4×4 track, it appears the big issue is crossing a tidal waterway that is underwater at high tide, well for once things worked for us, it is…..Low Tide…..

We cross easy, and start following a rather narrow 4×4 track. We should be able to follow this down for 20-30km and then cut across. Well that was the plan. To cut a long story short, all these cross roads were closed, so we drove about 60km south on a rough 4×4 track, only then to meet up with 26km of the roughest corrugated roads I’ve seen since Mereenie heading east, at least we don’t have the van on. Finally we reach the tar and find we’re 100km south of Exmouth. Story short….Road Loooooong

We book a campsite at Osprey Bay for tomorrow night.

  1. Love the turtle photo and the emus too. Sounds like the local authorities are not doing much of a job with good information as to the road conditions, closures etc. If they are relying on tourists would think they would make more of an effort. The water looks sooo inviting.
