We contemplate doing the Geikie Gorge, but by the time we would be able to get there it will probably be too hot. Another attraction, I wouldn’t mind seeing is Tunnel Creek, They say you need to wade into the water to get here, but at least we know that in advance. What we don’t know though is the condition of the dirt road in. It’s marked as a 4×4 road, so we’re not keen on taking the van down a road we’re not sure of the condition of.
Day 68 – Bungle Bungles to Fitzroy Crossing
A long drive today, about 400km. There is not a lot on the way. We stop in at Halls Creek, a bigger town than we expected. We take a short side trip out to the China Wall.
Day 67 – Warnum to Bungle Bungles
We wake at stupid o’clock (about 5:30), we’re not adjusting well to WA time. We’re all awake so we figure we’ll hit the road early and try and leapfrog Halls Creek and head to Fitzroy Crossing. It’s about 400km so it will be full day of driving. Overnight it has rained and it is actually pretty cool for up here. When we leave at 7:30 the car is only reporting 24°, this is the coolest I think we’ve seen since Uluru.

We drive up to the Five Rivers again to see the view a little better in the morning without the clouds. The view is a little better, but there is quite a haze around so still not super clear.

I’m having trouble adjusting to WA time and after a latish night do not want to get up in the morning. That and I’m not feeling great, some form of cold. It started with Caitlin a few days ago, then Liam, now it seems I’ve got it.

The next morning we wake up pretty early, we’re getting ready for the Goorrandalng walk, it’s only about 2km and should be pretty easy. Not long before we leave, a 4×4 drives up to us, firstly I though they may be here to do the walk too, but as it turns out they are part of the road crew and wanted to warn us of them grading the road today. He asked if we enjoyed the storm last night and even he said it was a big one.

The alarm gets us up just before 6, nobody likes it, but it is the only way we can attempt these walks given the heat. I’ve lived in Sydney pretty much all my life, and I can remember a few days of 40° repeating. However, I’d be surprised here if we’ve had a day under 35 in the last month.

The regular packup, get ready and we leave at 10.
We head right across town to start our journey west. As it happens it is Tuesday morning and this is when The Ghan arrives in Katherine.
Day 61 – Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk)
This is something I’ve been looking forward to from the beginning. For me it was up there with Uluru. We’re booked on an 11am boat tour, this covers gorge 1 and 2 of the 13 gorges that make up the system. I think when there is more water, they add in gorge 3.

Up early, although neither Justine nor I have slept very well in the heat. The kids aren’t keen on the walk but we encourage them to do it.
