Day 50 –Bitter Springs (Mataranka) to Mary River

We get up early so we can go back to bitter springs for another swim. We arrive at about 8am. This time we have the place completely to ourselves.

As I was filming with the GoPro, I go first. This time I see about 8 turtles. Mostly those a little bigger than your hand, but one was dinner plate sized. As I pass over them, they hide where they can. So the others following only see a few.
On each subsequent trip down someone else goes first and we all get the chance to look at them.

I’ve got to say at this time of the morning, floating downstream in this crystal clear water, with the mask and the snorkel is one of the most peaceful things I can remember doing. I was in my own private world.

Back to reality.

We return to the van, have breakfast and pack up. At this stage all we know is we’re heading north. After about an hour we get to Kathrine. We have been told the fridge left Melbourne on Monday, but have no idea where it is now (other than “In transit”). We call the agent in Darwin, and thankfully they know who we are and have all the right paperwork. They say the fridge could arrive Friday, but might be better to plan for Monday.
In this case, we decide we’ll do Kakadu, and that should bring us into Darwin on either Sunday or Monday.

We spend a bit of time in Katherine, and have a good look at the visitor centre. We’ll do Kathrine Gorge on the way back though.

After Katherine the landscape changes and we move from mostly plain country and we start to get into some hilly countryside.

We drive up to Pine Creek and head right to Kakadu, we stop just outside the park at Mary River Roadhouse. It’s 40 in the shade, the only trouble is there is no shade. At least they have a pool, although I’ve got to say, these pools of late aren’t very refreshing the water is probably 35+ degrees.

I find the NT naming of places somewhat optimistic. Daly Water, nope, Alice Springs, Nup. Mary River, you get the idea.

At one stage last night I thought we would be the only van in (they have cabins, and run a road house too). Around 6:30 another van came in so it was just the two of us.
