Day 36 – Alice Springs to Uluru

A reasonably long day of driving today, about 450km which should take just over 5 hours with a couple of brief stops.

It’s about 200km south on the Stuart Highway. We must have a tailwind as we are travelling very easily. This section of the highway is 130km/h. I can only dream!

Along the way we come across some drovers with about 100 or so head of cattle grazing on the side of the highway. Even the road train slow down for these guys.

We stop at Erldunda Road house to top up with fuel, its 214.9/l but that still going to be the cheapest fuel we see in a week. Then we head west on the Lasseter Highway for another 250km

Along the way, it’s amazing how much and how quickly the landscape changes (it has been a similar story for most of the trip). We go from flat savanna grasslands, to rocky almost barren hills, red desert sands to tall tree forests, and this could all be in 40-50km of road.

A quick photo opp of Mt Conner, then as we get within a 20-30km we start to get our first glimpse of “the rock”.

We arrive a Yulara campground and setup the caravan. The park is still pretty packed and this is meant to be the start of low season. The whole Yulara Resort is run by one organisation, so they have the whole thing sewed up. There is no competition here on price. Having said that, I understand it would be pretty expensive to run an operation all the way our here.

It’s 4pm in the afternoon and it feels like it is about 38°. The kids have a swim. From a lookout we get a distant view.

We gear up for the sunset (along with half the resort). It’s about 15km from the campground to the sunset carpark. As we get closer we get our first real look at Uluru. I’ve got to say it’s big!, Bigger than I was expecting. It’s just such an imposing….. well umm….. rock! It is really one of those things that photos can’t do justice too. It’s too big to get into a photo, but still show the size. It’s quite awe inspiring, and I’m quite happy that I’ve made the trip here.

There must be 80-100 cars at the viewing area. The mood with the crowd is pretty good. As we have a fair bit of haze around, it’s probably not the best of sunsets and we don’t really see the colour change too much. After dark we join the convoy of cars and coaches back to the resort.

  1. We had great conditions at the Rock at sunset but we didn’t see much of a colour change. I think you need certain filters on your camera lens to see those apparent remarkable colours. Nonetheless, the Rock IS remarkable in every way, as is Mt Connor and Kata Juta. Like the stars of the belt of Orion, these 3 features almost fall into a linear arrangement!!

    1. Yep, I think some photoshop helps.

The ranger pointed out that the three are almost all lined up. Although, she also pointed out Mt Conner formed in a very different manner to the other two sites.
