Day 30 – Corella Dam to Mt Isa

We wake to see the dam so calm you can see the reflection of the hills. Even though there are probably a dozen or so other campers here, they are so spread out it’s like we have the place to ourselves. It is so quiet here with just the sound of the birds, there are hundred here.

We use a couple of buckets of water from the dam to rinse down the van. Our little excursion the other day has left it pretty dirty.

We only need to make it to Mt Isa today, about 80km up the road.

We stop in at Mary Kathleen, an old uranium mine and the associated town. The town is strange, the roads are all there as are most of the building foundations, but the building are all gone, apparently sold when the mine closed in about 1982.

We unhitch (luckily) and drive about 6km up to the actual mine. While the place is signposted, once you get onto the property you are pretty much left to your own devices. I think we found it by good luck rather than good navigation. The road is really only 4×4.

Along the way we see our first Camel, not what I was expecting.

The open cut mine is partially full of water, a wonderful colour, but I’d probably not want to swim in it.

Onto Mt Isa and we treat the kids to some Macca’s this has been the first trip to the golden arches since we started.

I drop the tyre off to be repaired, and drop back an hour later to pick it up, $30 bargain. It does leave me a little concerned for the trip down the plenty highway in two days’ time.

It’s pretty hot with not a lot of breeze so we crank up the AC and have a movie night.
