Day 27 – Normanton to Kurumba

A short drive today, only about 80km. We’re on our way at 10am, and we stop off for a quick photo with Krys the croc (a full size replica of a croc killed up here in ’57).  It’s just after we take this photo we see the large sign saying don’t climb on the croc – Sorry!.

The road to Kurumba is so flat, you can practically see the horizon 360. A lot of the land appears almost to be salt flats.

We arrive and find that there are two sides, being Kurumba and Kurumba Point, about 2-3km apart. Kurumba is more of a port a little way down the river and there is some industry here. So we stay at Kurumba Point. Kurumba is on the bottom end of the Gulf of Carpentaria, and to be honest, if this was not the case, it would probably be even smaller than it is. Having said that, the van park is huge, although mostly empty at the moment, so it must be a lot busier in the peak season.

An afternoon swim to beat the heat. Here we talk to a family from Sydney who are about 8mths into a 12mth trip. They’ve come from the west and are starting their way down the east coast. So we swap some stories.

They have just come from Lawn Hill, it’s a place that I’ve read about and a number of the people on our trip have spoken about, but it’s not on our itinerary. It sounds interesting though.

We head to the sunset bar, for sunset (obviously) and although I’ve seen a lot of sunsets, this rates up there with them.
Dinner at the pub also one of the best steaks I’ve had in ages.
