Day 12 – Airlie Beach to Townsville

About 3 hours of driving today, but as we are already booked in to a van park in Townsville, it doesn’t really matter what time we arrive, so we are in no rush.

When we were booking into the park at Airlie beach Justine mentioned that it was beside the airport, my response was as long as we were not under the flightpath we should be OK. Well when she said next to the airport, I didn’t think she meant right next to the airport. The runway is about 100mtrs away, you can see the planes taxiing through the trees from the van (those with a keen eye will spot the plane in this photo). We don’t seem to be able to keep away from planes……

The kids go for an early morning swim. We pack-up and are away at 10.

While driving, Justine checked out some options do to along the way. She suggests the beaches at Bowen might be worth a try. Bowen is a few k’s off the road, and while I can’t say I’ve given it much thought, it was one of those towns I thought should be missed. Well I was wrong, the town itself is fine, but the beaches were great, the water was a wonderful blue and pretty warm too. It was about 29 degrees outside, but there was a nice breeze so it was great. We all went in for a dip.

Some lunch then 2.5 hour’s drive to get to Townsville. We park the van and I need to take a quick trip to Bunnings to get some stuff before we get off the east coast. Townsville must be a big place, there are 4 of them to choose from.

Anyway back to Bowen…. While we were there some whales where passing off shore, and a bunch of people climbed to the top of a series of rocks to get a better look. I wasn’t going to go up, but then I thought “hey it’s not every day you see whales”, so I start the climb, The first rock ledge was about 70cm or so high, so I jumped, but misjudged it and over balanced a bit, next thing I know I’m on my butt and have stubbed my 2nd toe. I only say this as when we got to Townsville and I took my shoes off (I don’t like driving in thongs) and my toe is bruised black, I’m a bit worried it may be a coral infection, so find a medical centre for a Doc to have a look, it’s 7pm, I can find only 1 medical centre open to 8pm, and of course it is about 10km away on the other side of town. Unlikely to be infected, most likely a fracture, off to get xray in the morning. Oh and the whales, they must have been over 2k offshore, you could hardly see a thing…….
