Day 14 – Cromwell to Glenorchy

A peaceful morning and the lake is super still and calm.   Caitlin torments some ducks who think that the rocks she threw might be food.

A drive through Cromwell and we head towards Arrowtown and Queenstown.  There was a road out here, beyond Bannockburn I wanted to take, apparently the highest road on the south island.  Now it just seems like the wrong day and it might just be a waste of time.

We arrive in Arrowtown, an old gold mining village that has keep most of its old building and is operating a bit like a real live tourist attraction.   A bit like Hill End or maybe a real life Sovereign Hill without the entrance fee.   We do a walk through town.  Lunch in the central park and then a walk out to some of the old miner’s huts by the creek.

Onto Queenstown, but this time we pretty much drive straight though and then drive up beside Lake Wakatipu to the top of the lake and a town called Glenorchy.   Whilst nice, there’s not much here so after a quick photo stop we make our way back down the lake and look for a nice camp spot.

We eventually stop mid-afternoon at a place called “Twenty Five Mile Stream”  Not much more than a track down to the side of the lake, but the view is great, we’re far enough of the road so it should be peaceful.

It’s a really nice day, warmish, the suns out it’s about 3pm, so we get the chairs out to sit and relax by the lake  We’re outside for about 2 mins then bang, damn sand flies, bloody millions of the blighters.  So we’re forced inside.   Ah well the views still nice.

Justine and the kids play some games and I force myself to have a bit of an afternoon nap.   Hard work all this driving.
