Day 10 – Hawdon Shelter Campground to Grumpy Retreat (Geraldine)

It was cold overnight alright as we get up it is really foggy.  The van has it at -2°.  There are a couple of puddle outside and they are frozen.   Liam does some running on the spot on one of them.

Still a bunch of cars around, so there must be some keen trampers out in those mountains.  While we’re packing up, a lady, must be in her 60’s turns up, signs the walker registration book and heads off, that’s keen.

We’re now heading towards Mt Cook again to see what our options are.   We return back to the main highway and after about 30mins we arrive at Castle Hill.  The last trip here was a bit rushed, so we take the walk again.   We try and recreate one of my favorite family photos of the last trip.  As we’ve got more time we take a better walk around.

There is this frozen pond up top and some photographer is taking photos, I can only assume she’s a model, I’m sure she’d appreciate a jacket.  Caitlin particularly just wants to throw broken ice everywhere.

Back on the highway, there was a side road here that would have crossed country and would have come out near Lake Coleridge that I wanted to take.  It’s deemed a summer road only, I’m not sure what that means, but I take the hint and we’ll keep to the main roads.

An early lunch at the Sheffield Pie shop, still not that great, but this time we take extra care to ensure we don’t leave anything behind.

Back inland and over the Raikia Gorge.   We need to do some washing, so we’ll stay at a caravan park tonight, and we choose Gumpy’s Retreat, just outside Gerardine.  There is a jumping pillow and another family with young family are here, so the kids go wild and burn off some energy.
