Day 126 – Port Broughton to Peterborough

Pack up and drive back to Port Pirie to replace all the food that we think might be sus.
We find that Port Augusta has had the 2nd highest temperature in the WORLD yesterday. Only second to some other S.A. town (Tarcoola). It will be another day in the low 40’s, although today is overcast so while very warm we don’t have the baking sun.

As we leave the main highway, we’re 206km from Adelaide, the closest by road we’ll get to it. We start hitting some hills, driving along the coast as we’ve done for the last week or so the land has been pretty flat.

Though Jamestown, then onto a town called Yongala, there are a number of old stone buildings here, but I can’t say that any of them look occupied. It could be the heat, but this looks like a ghost town. It’s rather creepy.

We arrive at Peterborough, into the only van park in town. There is a steam train museum here called Steamtown. I’m sure we’ve driven past dozens of train museums on this trip, but this one is meant to be pretty damn good.

We rush to get to what is meant to be the last tour at 2:30. I’m not sure why, but when we arrive there are no more tours for the day. I’m guessing the heat has beaten everyone. We’ll come back in the morning, it should be cooler.

A drive through town, while many shopfronts have closed, there is still a bit more life here than Yongala.

Back to the park and have a swim, the pool is pretty cold. Shows the heatwave has only been on for a few days, given it a day or two and the water will be warm.

As we cook dinner, we see a red cloud out in the distance, a dust storm is blowing away a whole lot of top soil, OK dirt.

  1. Glad to hear someone distinguish the generic “dust” in such storms as being what it truly is…the most valuable part if the soil. I would have an identity issue if I was a topsoil particle but described as being a lowly iota of dust…..anyway… I guess its just a matter of days and you’ll be home. Welcome back to NSW
