Day 124 – Port Gibbon to Port Augusta

The suns up and light is coming onto the van a little earlier than I would have liked. The waves have been noisier here than at many of the other beach camps we’ve been in. Not an unpleasant sound, but somewhat unexpected.

Through Cowell and then onto Whyalla. We’ve been told the tour at the HMAS Whyalla at the Whyalla visitor’s information centre is worthwhile. The HMAS Whyalla was the first ship built here, back in 1941. After the war, the ship was bought by the port of Melbourne and used around Port Phillip Bay. When it was ready to be scrapped, the local community thought it would be a good idea to buy it, the got it for $5,000, bargain, but it cost another 500k to get it relocated to the visitors centre some 2km from the coast.

The tour is pretty good and the guide was very engaging with the kids. The fact that there was only the 4 of us, and one other bloke made it easy. A quick visit to their local Maritime museum, which was also pretty good.

They do tours of the Steelworks too, that would have been good, but it’s only three times a week at 9AM, so more planning would have been needed.

The only trouble now is it’s getting very hot. Port Augusta is going be 45°, all around this area is going be hot for the next 4-5 days. Broken Hill is meant to be 45, and Mildura is set for 46. Any hope of free camping has literally melted away. A van park with power and a pool is in order.

  1. Do you want me to put bins out to defend the space between the driveway and Whites Creek Lane. If so please tell me estimated time of arrival so I can prepare. Looking forward to having you home.
