Day 6 – 1770, or Seventeen Seventy, or the Town of 1770.

We got up a lot earlier than I would have ever voluntarily done at home. So after we collected our possessions that had been distributed around Justine’s mum’s place and had breakfast we were on the road just before 9, but not before the next door neighbour brought over a small turtle he just found in the corner of his garden. Justine’s mum is a huge greenie, so was happy to take it down to the local wetlands. At the time the turtle was not showing heaps of life, but we’ve since been assured it is alive and well.

Today we drove past a lot of cane farms and macadamia nut orchards, we’ve even seen one of the small cane hauling trains. We head to a campsite at Agnes Waters and arrived just before 12. A couple of laps of the campsite and we realised it was full. Not only that, we got reports of a bushfire in the area, there was a bit of smoke and we were overtaken by a RFS truck on the way in. Government alerts were to leave the area, so we took the hint and move up the road to 1770, or however you write it. In hindsight, we think the alerts where a bit over the top, but hey we’re here now.

We’re at the Captain Cook Holiday Village (How much did the marketing dept charge to come up with that name?). We’ve had our first goanna encounter, although the photo did not work out. A quick walk down to the beach, and a dip in the pool for the kids. Starting to feel relaxed already.

I did make a nice rookie mistake, well two actually. On my first attempt at reversing in, I was going to put the door and the awing on the wrong side, duh. Then when I fixed that and put the van on the right side of the spot, I’ve worked out I’m more than 10mtrs from the services. How do I know this? I’ve got a 10m extension lead, and 10m water hose. Double Doh. Someone lent me a lead, and we had enough water in the tanks to cover the night.

Had a couple of grey nomads give the thumbs up to the van layout which was nice. We had our first dinner outside, and of course I’ve been eaten alive by the sand flies. Need to get the bushman’s on a bit earlier tomorrow.

The caravan park had a whole bunch of DVDs, so we took the opportunity to have a movie night before bed.
