Day 2 – Selwyn

Overnight, sometime just after midnight I wake and the heater is off again, Bugger.  The van is still warm, so not the end of the world.  The kids are in then new sleeping bags, so I know they’ll be warm and I pull up an extra blanket on us.   I would restart the heater, but on this damn Thermostat mode, it runs like a jet for 10-15+ mins, and in this quiet valley you’d be able to hear it back in Cooma!

So in bed it’s not too bad, but the van itself is freezing when the alarm goes off at 7, no one wants to get up, I drag myself out at 10 past and fire up the heater, while early, I figure most people will be up.

Breaky and get the final stuff ready and we pull out around 8:15, it’s about 30k’s, 20-25odd mins to get to Selwyn.

As we drive, there us more snow on the edges of the road and as we get closer the country side ends up as a white winter wonderland, snow is everywhere, maybe not a full covering and certainly not very deep, but a lot more than I’ve ever seen here.

Into Selywn and we don’t need to park too far away and as the kids lessons are this afternoon we don’t need to deal with that bun fight this morning.   They kids get their skis on, the snow is really icy and very fast.  So it takes them a while (and a few falls) to get their confidence back.

The snow is a bit more patchy than I recall last time, but the cover is still pretty good.

In no time the kids are doing the regular runs.

We have an early lunch, the kids do a another few runs and at 1:30 their lessons start.  Still a bun fight, but not as bad as the morning.

The instructors give the kids a little test, and in the end Caitlin gets bumped up to the next level, so that’s a bonus.

During our down time in the complex we use their Wifi to lookup the heater controls.  So I now know how to switch it back to the flow rate mode.

Lessons done, Liam has had enough, but Caitlin wants to keep going.  That’s the last we see of her for at least the next 30 odd minutes, as she went on the bigger runs that don’t come near the main complex building.

Finally, around 4:30 we hit the road, the car momentarily registers 0° outside (I concure!).  I go to take a little side trip into Three Mile Dam to take a look, but the dirt track is covered in snow.  There are tyre tracks in the snow, but they are at least 10-15cm deep, too much for me to risk this later in the day with everyone pretty tired.  Maybe tomorrow.

Back at the van, I expected a few more campers, but no.  I change the heater setting and it starts like a dream.  Now just to let it warm up from the 2° the car reported on the way in.

The forecast for tomorrow is pretty similar to today, but tomorrow night, Saturday morning is meant to be snow, and maybe even a little more on Saturday night, so let’s hope we get the chance to see some fall.

No fire tonight, but a few more campers turn up after dark.
