Nearby to Undara is Kalkani Crater, an extinct volcano crater, it’s about 15km away. It was too hot to think about walking up there yesterday, and given our tour today is at 10:30 we can sneak in a side trip this morning. We are there at 8am, but it is already pretty warm.

A slow start, and we head into Port Douglas to have a look at the town and do some shopping before we head west. Port Douglas is a whole lot different to the towns around it. It’s a town not really designed for Vans. Boats yes, Vans No.

About 150km and 2hrs.
A slower start to today and we leave just after 9. We don’t plan on going too far, I’ve penciled in the Calliope River campground to test out our first free camping site. We arrive pretty early at 11:30 and decide we’ll pull up for lunch and work out if we will stay or if we’ll push on and find another campground further north.

We’re kinda starting our way back towards Christchurch now.
Through Clyde and Alexandra, then we hit the east coast near Palmerston.

A beautiful morning by the lake.
The two years couldn’t be more different on the snow front. We’re starting to realise probably how lucky we got last year. None of us are skier or the like so we don’t really want to go to one of these ski resorts and pay 100’s of dollars each for a daily lift pass just to have a bit of a play . We find a place called Snow Farm. We can drive all the way up there and they have these half day play session on a toboggan run. So we make our booking and start driving over there.

A peaceful morning and the lake is super still and calm. Caitlin torments some ducks who think that the rocks she threw might be food.

We’re up with the sunrise. We left a polite distance of about 5 or 6mtrs between us and the other van, there’s plenty of room here. Overnight some bloody campers in a jucy van have stuffed themselves in-between us. Grrrr.

A day I’d say I’ve been waiting 12 months for, maybe more. Since our walk last year got cancelled due to too much snow. It’s a 10km return walk but it’s meant to be pretty flat and easy.

So we leave the caravan park and we drive a short way back north to head east over the Arthur’s Pass road. We stop off at the Tunnel Terrace work, near Kumara Junction. This was one of the places I’d considered free camping on the last trip (that was before day one last year tanked!)

I’m up early so, sneak out to see the sunrise. It’s a clear, cold morning. The tide now appears fully in and the water is calm as anything. Did I say cold, it’s about 4°
